Renters Design Tips & More!

Hi Interior’s Enthusiast!,
Happy Sunday! I hope all your weeks have gone well and are enjoying a weekend of relaxing or renovating or whatever you might be doing!
This week has been quite a monumental one! This has been my last week as a renter! Next week we move into our new home we’re buying and begin a new chapter of our lives! To reflect on my time as a renter I have created a new little series full of renter tips for you. Here are my top tips…
1. Rugs are your best friend!
Cover that ugly or dated floor finish with a lovely rug that you can always move with you onto your next space so it is not money wasted. On the other hand… rugs are also a great way to protect the landlords floor to ensure you get your security deposit back.
This way you look at a floor design you love and the rental property is protected… everyone wins!
2. Paint the walls!
Controversial, but it is just paint. You can paint it back. You may say, but why spend time and money on something temporary like painting a wall that isn’t mine. Well I have a theory on this...
We spend money on temporary experiences all the time, every time you go for a meal out it is a temporary experience but we do it for the experience and we enjoy it. It is the same for paint on your walls. Paint them a colour your love so you enjoy the living experience in your space for the next year or so and when you are finished with the space paint them back if you landlord prefers and be happy with the wonderful experience you had while living in the space. Paint massively effects how you feel and experience a space. This is what life is about… enjoyable experiences!
3. Don’t forget about your window treatments
If you have window treatments already up in the space that you hate, change them. Take a picture before, take them down and store them in the attic neatly. Then put something up that makes you happy. Most curtains and window treatments can be moved to a new space, you may need a slight alteration on them for a specific window, but nothing a great seamstress can not resolve in a day.
4. Remember the lighting!
Lighting is such a massive contributor to how that the space looks and feels. In a rental you won’t have the ability to manipulate the circuit lighting, however there are some tips to enhance your lighting to create that desirable lighting layered effect.
First tip - Low level lighting. Where ever you have seating in your home, I want you to make sure those seating areas are surrounded by lamps. You will be able to get a beautiful variety of lamps, table lamps and floor lamps, across all price ranges to suit your budget, but this is a quick and easy way to bring in an additional light source that will be able to move with you to your next home.
Second Tip, also look at battery lamps. There are loads of gorgeous options, which give you a huge amount of flexibility to add additional lighting where they may not be a socket e.g: Kitchen, Hallway, alcoves, writing desks, the options are endless!
