How to configure the perfect lighting

Lighting is what makes a rooms atmosphere...tips below on how to get it right

Hi , Happy Saturday!

I hope you’re having a lovely weekend so far. This week we’re continuing with the lighting theme but on a broader note. I know this is an area where so many people struggle and have questions so I hope you’ll find this helpful.

Lighting is complicated but I’ve broken it down into the main groupings to help you layer your lighting appropriately for the space you’re designing.

1. Ambient Lighting: The Foundation

Ambient lighting provides the overall illumination for your room. Think of it as the natural light from windows or overhead lighting like pendants, chandeliers or spotlights. The goal is to have the light high and well-placed for even distribution. One tip: avoid overuse of spotlights—you don't want your home to feel like an airport (if you've been following me for awhile, you know this is my biggest bug bear!!). Instead, consider a mix of overhead lights combined with the lighting below for a soft, three-dimensional glow.

2. Task Lighting: Functional & Focused

Task lighting is all about lighting for specific activities like reading or cooking. It can include wall lights, spotlights, strip lights, or lamps, depending on the task. For example, a reading light in a bedroom. In bathrooms, wall lights beside mirrors create perfect front-facing light for tasks like makeup or shaving. Functional doesn’t have to mean boring—task lighting can still be decorative!

3. Accent Lighting: Adding Drama

Accent lighting highlights specific features in your home, like art, architectural details, or that fabulous staircase. Uplights or downlights can enhance these elements, adding another layer of interest to your design.

4. Decorative Lighting: The Finishing Touch

Finally, decorative lighting is your chance to add personality! Think statement lamps, sconces, or chandeliers. This is all about design and atmosphere, adding that cozy, inviting feel. The right decorative light can transform a dull room into a stunning focal point.

3 easy to remember top tips:

  1. Use dimmers for more lighting control.

  2. Add task lighting under cabinets for kitchens in order to avoid spots where possible.

  3. Avoid harsh lighting in bedrooms for a relaxed vibe.

This week I visited Decorex, a high trade show for all sorts of Interiors related suppliers. I came across a few new brands that you might like to look at. For hardware I discovered Hendel & Handle and their amazing collections of handles and Tori Murphy with their excellent made to measure curtains. If you like a stripe, Tori Murphy is for you!
