How to design the perfect kitchen
Olivia Caplan Design: Kitchen design checklist!

Hi Interior’s Enthusiast!
Well, what a month it has been! My 30 tips in 30 days finished on Tuesday; I absolutely loved it and even more thrillingly, so did you! I’m delighted with how the tips have gone down and will most definitely do another round soon. There is plenty more to come on my socials so please do stay tuned.
I have SO much interiors goodness to share with you!
This week’s topic is on kitchens. Arguably the most important room in any home, so hopefully you’ll find these tips useful when designing yours.
Oh and one last thing from me before we get into the kitchen tips!
After so many of you said you'd like to join a community of fellow interior design enthusiasts, to share top tips, ask questions and generally speak with other people in similar positions, I've decided to launch that community.
But what I need to know from you is….
What platform should the community be hosted on? |
Thank you and now onto kitchens….
Five tips to get your kitchen right…
1. Don’t leave a Gap Between Cabinets and Ceiling
Many kitchens feature cabinets that stop short of the ceiling, creating an awkward gap that collects dust and wastes storage space. Consider extending your cabinets all the way up instead. This maximizes storage and creates a more polished look. Use those high spaces for items you don't need frequently. Even with off-the-rack kitchens, a skilled builder or joiner can often help you achieve this custom look.
2. Don’t Rely Solely on Overhead Spotlights
While good lighting is crucial, harsh overhead spotlights alone can create an unwelcoming atmosphere. Aim for layered lighting instead. Combine task lighting under cabinets, ambient lighting from pendants or wall sconces, and perhaps even a table lamp for softer illumination. This approach improves functionality and adds depth to your space. It also caters for all eventualities which is crucial in the hardest working room in a house.
3. Be Mindful of Disproportionate Island Sizes
An island can be a great addition, but size and proportion are key. Before committing, carefully plan your layout. Consider mapping out the space on your floor with tape to visualize how it will work - it’s also exciting to see what your space might feel like! Don't forget to account for clearance around seating areas and appliances.
4. Don’t Play It Too Safe with Color
While a neutral kitchen can be beautiful, don't be afraid to incorporate some colour. Even subtle hues can add interest and personality. Consider soft greens and blues or even a pale pink for a neutral that's a bit more interesting. You can have a different colour on your wall units as your island too if you like. Your kitchen should reflect your taste and bring you joy.
5. Plan Your Storage Carefully
Before finalising your kitchen layout, plan exactly where each item will be stored. Think about the size of your appliances, the height of your tallest pots, and the width of your largest platters. Plan for specific zones - cooking, cleaning, food prep - and ensure that the items you need for each task are stored nearby. This detailed planning will pay off with a kitchen that functions smoothly.
