DO NOT waste money on these things...

Olivia Caplan Design: How to save money on a Reno

Hi Interior’s Enthusiast!

Here in the UK the weather has been wonderful, and I’ve been making the most of it - I hope you have too wherever you are reading this!

I launched my community on Facebook this week, and if you haven’t already I would love you to check it out here. There are so many fascinating renovations and house projects going on!

Anyway onto my design tips of the week…

1. Unnecessarily High-End Appliances

Unless you're a billionaire, a chef, or an extremely passionate home cook, those flashy Wolf appliances might not be worth the splurge. For most of us, high-quality mid-range appliances will do the job beautifully without breaking the bank, and critically will last! And don’t even think about getting one of those fridges with the glass doors…

Absolutely not.

2. Too Much Glass

I know, I know - those three-sided glass rooms look stunning in magazines. But in real life? They're often impractical and eye-wateringly expensive. Consider your actual view (is it just a fence?) and remember that all that glass needs high-spec treatment for temperature control, not to mention pricey curtains or blinds. Less can definitely be more here!

3. Excess Spotlights

My personal pet peeve! Those runways of recessed lights might seem modern, but they often create a clinical, unflattering atmosphere. Focus on task lighting where you need it, and use other types of lights to create ambience. Your electricity bill will thank you.

4. Trend-Focused Furniture

Remember when everyone had an Eames chair? Or how about those kidney-shaped sofas popping up everywhere now? Unless you truly love these pieces, resist the urge to buy furniture just because it's trendy. Invest in pieces you adore that will stand the test of time. You’ll thank me in 5 years!

5. Generic Designer Prints

Those Prada and Chanel logo prints? Please, leave them in the dorm rooms where they belong! Instead, support up-and-coming artists or photographers. You'll get unique pieces that reflect your personality and might even increase in value. I really cherish the pieces of art I’ve bought from local artists and think you will too!

Remember your home should reflect YOU, not the latest fad in a design magazine. Don't let trends dictate your choices or bust your budget. Stay true to your style, and you'll create a space that's both beautiful and enduring.

Don’t do this!

What you need to think about ahead of first fix?

Thanks so much for reading, see you next week.
