Olivia Caplan Design: Lighting mistakes to avoid
Hi Interior’s Enthusiast!,
It's been a big week at Olivia Caplan Design! As you have hopefully seen, I launched my Paint Colour Guide which was so exciting, but equally quite nerve-wracking after spending so much time putting it together!
I'm so happy that so many of you have been enjoying it and finding it truly useful when selecting your paint colours during home renovations! You can find it here 💙
Anyway, onto my design tips of the week and this week, it’s on bathrooms…
3 Common Bathroom Mistakes When Renovating
1. Large Format Marble Tiles While marble is undoubtedly beautiful, large-format tiles lean heavily toward a contemporary aesthetic. Personally, I prefer a more traditional look that exudes warmth and timelessness. Large-format marble tiles, although sleek and modern, just don’t align with the classic, inviting atmosphere I strive for in my bathroom design. They can feel too cold and clinical, detracting from the cozy, comfortable space most of us want in a bathroom. | ![]() |
2. Black Taps and Fixtures Black taps and fixtures may be on-trend right now, but they come with a significant downside: longevity. From my experience, they don't hold up well over time. Fading, chipping, and water spots are common issues that arise, leaving your bathroom looking tired. I’ve covered this in more detail in a previous video (now with over 1 million views!), but the bottom line is — avoid black fixtures if you want a bathroom that looks fresh for years to come. | ![]() |
3. Mosaic Tiles On the opposite end of the spectrum from large format tiles, we have mosaic tiles. While they might offer a certain intricate charm, they come with a major practical drawback—grout, and LOTS of it. Bathrooms are spaces that demand ease of cleaning and durability, and mosaic tiles simply introduce too much maintenance. The aesthetic might also feel a bit dated, but it’s really the overwhelming amount of grout that makes mosaics a no-go in my book. | ![]() |
Thanks so much for reading, see you next week.
